What we do know is Willis Whatley was the son of Shirley Whatley son of Willis son of Shirley Whatley. Rev. Ball in his book A Glance into the Great South-East, or, Clarke County, Alabama, and Its Surroundings from 1540 to 1877 writes that F. B. Whatley was the grandson of the Rev. Willis Whatley. The Elder Willis Whatley left a will in Clarke County naming his children. There is no documented proof of which son of Rev. Willis Whatley is the father of Franklin B. Whatley. Mary Elizabeth Johns is the mother of Franklin B. Whatley. Elizabeth was born about 1805 in South Carolina. She married James Edwin Davis Jan. 19, 1833 in Clarke County Alabama. To this marriage she had Mary Elizabeth Davis b. 1834, John Blount Davis b. 1835, Frederick Davis b. 1838 and Margaret Ann Davis b. 1842 all in Clarke County, AL. Edwin Davis gave his son Frederick Davis by deed of gift all of his land and belongings on Frederick's 9th birthday allowing his wife Elizabeth Johns Davis to liver there until the 21st birthday of his son with Elizabeth and another as guardian. Pvt. Frederick Davis died Aug. 5, 1862 in a Confederate hospital in Mobile, Alabama. I am sure his mother was still alive and did not die until 1868. John B. Davis petitioned the court for the sale of the estate of Frederick Davis 6 years after he died. Perhaps to allow his mother to live in her home until her death. The heirs of Frederick's estate were his siblings. F. B. Whatley, John B. Davis and Margaret (Mary) A. Davis Drury.
